Back to school initiative for 2022 - 1st round of donations
Every year we pick about 10-15 schools from very rural areas of Sri Lanka and handpick students from families who are unable to afford to buy books for the new school year. This is a very time-consuming process as the volunteers go into details of finding smaller neglected schools and get letters from the staff and try to filter the kids that desperately need the funding to continue their studies every year.
This year we started the donation campaigns in November with a fundraiser going with the giving November and then we also aligned our generous monthly member donations totaling over half a million rupees. We identified a total of 266 students over 10 schools within 6 different geographic areas.
As the first step, we managed to hand over the booklists to 47 students in the following 3 schools in Madamahanuwara
1. Rabukpotha primary school
2. Wegala Kanishta widyalaya
3. Uduwela primary school
The children and the staff were really happy to receive this donation as there are always children losing interest in education due to their family financial situation. One school operates off a temple as it has been very rural to access and the infrastructure has been poor but the children and staff still try to make the best out of it. At the start of every year, it is challenging for parents to find the money to send the children to school due to the pressure of family commitments. We try to make sure with your generous donations to make things easier year over year by providing for the essentials and making sure that the donations find their way only to the much deserved.
Thank you to everyone who donated for the fundraiser as well as individual donations for this round one of book donations. We will share the final invoices and a list of contributors halfway through the campaign. A special thank you to our volunteer Udayanga for coordinating the efforts and making sure that the task is done in a timely manner.
Thank you and stay blessed this new year. To all of you, Thanks for giving to someone in need!
