A very rural school called Mugunuwala primary school is in Walihelathanna village in Sabaragamuwa district. The school was formed in 1960 in a little shed with 15 students. And eventually, in 1985 the numbers grew up to 186 students. But due to the rural nature of the village and its inhabitants, the college was running low on funding to operate the school, it shut down for years since then. The parents are very poor and they are not in a position to get the required stationery and equipment for the kids to get back to school as well.
Recently they are trying to reopen the school back up and the donors like you are who they needed to quickly get back on their feet. Raise Sri Lanka had three fundraisers running around the same time and we allocated all the funding to this initiative. Working with "Hard Truths" closely, we managed to obtain verification of request as well as get quotations for the booklists for 21 students, 1 library cupboard, and one office cupboard.
Looking at the enthusiasm of the parents and students there is a good chance that the student numbers can grow up if the required infrastructure can be supported. We are glad to be part of this initiative to send the children back to school. It was a happy day and indeed a stepping stone for a children's education.
Special thanks to the three birthday fundraisers by Pyumi Ranthilini for Nethu, Helmini Jayarathne, and Amila Abeykoon and for everyone who donated for this cause to make this possible.
